Latest News

Read my latest article published in FE News on 28th October: “Reforming Adult Learning is the Pathway to Unlocking the Levelling Up Agenda”. A personal reflection on the first report from the Lifelong Education Commission, chaired by former Universities minister Chris Skidmore MP and sponsored by the Res Publica think tank.

Provocations and Reflections
My latest thoughts, challenges and light-bulb moments summarised in bite-sized chunks.
For organizations of all types, the starting point for Race Equality is radically different to all other EDI challenges in one particular aspect. Whereas most “protected characteristic” groups are evenly distributed across the UK, BAME communities are not. Ethnic diversity is concentrated in only some areas of Britain – mostly the urban areas – and much of rural and small town Britain remains overwhelmingly White. For place-based institutions like schools, FE Colleges and some universities, this has an enormous impact. It means that the priority given to Race Equality varies greatly, as does each organization’s capacity and capability for tackling the issue. There is therefore no “one size fits all” solution to bringing about positive change.
Apprenticeships are undergoing a process of gentrification. More and more of the apprenticeship terrain is being colonised by higher-achieving, aspirational young professionals. More and more apprenticeship funding is going on degree level education, rather than intermediate level technical education. This is undoubtedly raising the status of apprenticeships in public opinion, which is great news. But the risk is that the rise of higher apprenticeships will be at the expense of applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds, who now have fewer opportunities than before and find themselves competing for a dwindling slice of the available apprenticeship funding pie. What can we do to avoid this pitfall?
