About Andy Forbes

Currently Head of Development for the Lifelong Education Commission, sponsored by the Res Publica Think Tank, Andy brings a fresh new approach to issues of transformation and sustainable growth. A creative and innovative organisational change consultant, with over 35 years experience in further education, including 12 years as College Principal. Has worked in schools, colleges and universities. Author, commentator, mentor, speaker. UCAS Trustee and Chair of the Board of UCAS Media. Board member of Ambitious about Autism charity.  Lover of lifelong learning. Passionate believer in the power of education to improve the lives of individuals and communities.


Andy Forbes did his teacher training at Manchester University and began his career as a secondary school English teacher, before making the transition to further education by joining Manchester College in 1985. He started his senior management career as Director of Widening Participation when he joined Oldham College in 1999. He went on to be Vice Principal at Blackpool and the Fylde College from 2004-2009, and then was appointed Principal of Hertford Regional College. In 2015 he moved to be Principal of the College of Haringey Enfield and North East London, and when the college merged into the Capital City College Group in 2018 he became Principal of City & Islington College. From 2019-21 he was Principal of City of Bristol College.
