“Levelling up” for those trapped in low skill, low wage areas means levelling up the resources given to the sector best placed to provide practical assistance – Further Education.
FE Colleges are place based. They serve local communities and have strong and active links with local employers, through work experience and apprenticeships. They are part of the local economy.
FE Colleges can be found in most disadvantaged areas. While many English towns don’t have universities near them, most have FE Colleges on the doorstep, many delivering HE courses.
FE Colleges deliver lifelong learning. They give students multiple opportunities to make up lost ground after school. Although restricted by funding rules, most Colleges still manage to support thousands of adults, as well as young people, to improve their skills and qualifications.
FE Colleges are not an alternative to HE. We need partnership, rather than competition, with FE and HE working closely together to open up adult access to higher education.
